Climbing the hill to St Woolos Cathedral in Newport isn’t for the faint of heart. However, once you reach the top, the view, the stillness, and the architectural beauty make it all worth it.
This watercolour was painted a couple of years ago, inspired by that very moment. I remember pausing at the top, catching my breath, and quietly admiring how the stone structure stood so assuredly against the soft landscape. It felt timeless.

A Little History
St Woolos Cathedral, or Eglwys Gadeiriol Sant Gwynllyw in Welsh, is one of the oldest functioning religious buildings in Wales. The original church is thought to have been founded in the 5th or 6th century by Saint Gwynllyw, a Welsh king who converted to Christianity.
Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt, extended, and fortified—especially after attacks during the Norman era. Much of the present structure includes Norman, medieval, and Victorian elements. It was officially designated as a cathedral in 1949, serving as the mother church of the Diocese of Monmouth.
What I love about this place is not just its history, but how it seems to rise out of the landscape without disturbing it—quiet, steadfast, and deeply rooted. This painting is a personal reflection of that moment: one foot in history, one in the present, all wrapped in light and colour.

The Significance of St Woolos Cathedral
St Woolos Cathedral is more than just a historical site. It serves as a spiritual hub for the community. Many people visit not only for its beauty but also for its significance in their lives. The cathedral hosts various events, including weddings, baptisms, and memorial services. Each event adds to the rich tapestry of stories woven into its walls.
The cathedral’s architecture is a blend of styles, reflecting the various periods of its construction. Visitors can see elements from the Norman period, medieval Gothic arches, and Victorian embellishments. This architectural diversity tells a story of resilience and adaptation.
The Surrounding Landscape
The landscape surrounding St Woolos Cathedral is equally captivating. The hill offers panoramic views of Newport and the River Usk. On a clear day, you can see for miles. The lush greenery and the gentle rolling hills create a serene backdrop that enhances the cathedral's beauty.
Walking around the grounds, you can find various paths leading to hidden spots. Each corner reveals a new perspective of the cathedral and its surroundings. The tranquillity of the area invites reflection and contemplation.
A Personal Connection
For many, St Woolos Cathedral is a place of personal connection. It holds memories of significant life events and quiet moments of reflection. The stillness of the cathedral allows visitors to pause and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.
This connection is what inspired my painting. I wanted to capture not just the physical beauty of the cathedral but also the emotions it evokes. The interplay of light and shadow in the painting reflects the peace I felt during my visit.
